“How the Darwin of the forest hopes to save our planet from climate chaos” by Lucy Siegle, The Standard

Dr. Suzanne Simard was recently featured by The Standard in a wide-ranging profile on forest resilience, climate change, and her newest bestselling book, When the Forest Breathes: Renewal and Resilience in the Natural World. The piece traces Suzanne’s groundbreaking research on mother trees and mycorrhizal networks, while also highlighting the long-term vision of the Mother Tree Project, including its nine research sites across British Columbia and its 500-year research timeline.

The article situates Dr. Simard’s work within the urgent realities of climate change and forest degradation, while emphasizing the hope found in forests’ capacity to recover when they are cared for differently. It also highlights a central message of the Mother Tree Project & Program: that forests are not simply collections of trees, but living, interconnected systems whose health depends on relationships above and below ground.

“People need to be on the land, doing this work and caring about it as though our lives depended on it.” — Dr. Suzanne Simard, The Standard

About The Mother Tree Project & Program

The Mother Tree Project & Program (MTPP) is a research and outreach initiative housed in UBC’s Faculty of Forestry & Environmental Stewardship, rooted in the idea that forests are deeply interconnected systems, not just collections of individual trees.
